Understand what you can control
Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance, and prominence: how well a business matches a search, how close it is, and how well known it is. You cannot buy a better organic local ranking or guarantee the same position for every searcher.
That makes a single search from your own phone a poor report card. Someone across Monroe County may see different results. Start by making your business information complete and accurate, then evaluate whether suitable customers are finding and contacting you.
Audit your public information as a customer
Write down your correct business name, phone number, website, services, hours, and the places you genuinely serve. Compare that reference against your website and public listings. Correct conflicting information, particularly anything that could send a customer to the wrong place or cause them to call when nobody is available.
Then follow the links. Does your website button lead to a working page? Is the phone number answered under the same business name? Can a visitor understand whether they should come to you or arrange a visit? Treat this as a customer-service check before treating it as a marketing exercise.
Keep account ownership organized. Use a business-controlled account where possible, maintain recovery access, and give helpers their own appropriate access rather than passing around your password. Knowing who controls the listing prevents avoidable headaches later.
Make your website explain the actual service
A page that says only “We do it all” leaves a visitor with more questions. Describe the jobs you accept, the customer problems you address, and the next step. A homeowner comparing well-pump service providers needs different information from someone planning a bathroom renovation.
Use place names naturally where they help explain availability. Describe your real service area rather than creating dozens of nearly identical pages with different town names. If a location deserves a separate page, give it useful, distinct information.
For example, a hypothetical contractor might explain which projects require an on-site assessment, what a customer should have ready for a quote, and whether travel affects scheduling. Those details help people judge fit without making unsupported promises about search rankings.
Make honest feedback easy
Ask customers for an honest review after a genuine experience and provide a direct review link. Google prohibits incentives such as discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews. Its guidance also encourages businesses to value balanced feedback and respond professionally.
Use the same neutral invitation consistently. If a customer raises a problem, handle it respectfully and move private details to a direct conversation. A public reply should help readers understand that you listen, without exposing the customer’s account or arguing about every detail.

Keep a short maintenance list
The useful work is often triggered by a business change: new hours, a new phone number, a service you no longer offer, or a website move. Update the affected information when the change happens. Save a recurring reminder to inspect the customer journey occasionally, at a pace your business can sustain.
Record inquiries and booked work alongside the changes you make. If calls rise but most are for a service you do not provide, clarify your information. If the right people inquire but do not book, review the offer and follow-up process. Visibility is only one part of winning the work.
Your action checklist
- Your business information agrees across your main public pages.
- Customers can tell what you do and where you work.
- Your contact links lead to the right destination.
- Your review request asks for honest feedback without incentives.
- You track relevant inquiries and booked work, not just search positions.
